29 03:03
Come on in I have been waiting All my life though it feels like yesterday 29 I feel the earth rotating All the while my feet Planted in the ground I’m standing still Come on it There are no secrets Everyone knows I died here long ago 29 and weaker than the weakness that built this bed of mine planted in the sound I’m standing still I can’t move I can’t move Come on come on come on come on Come on in Our time is going Purchase the parchment and write it all down 29 and nothing worth showing but a temple in the trees planted in the ground and standing still

Mercy 04:52
I never felt so lonely As I did today Looking through a mirror Staring at a stranger Wondering when it all changed Is it just the coming of age? Youth deposed and faith displaced Or am I really falling into weariness Too old to run Too young to fade away And I never felt so broken So bone aching cold I guess I learned too much Or not enough And now I don’t know where to go It’s just I’ve been fighting for long That it’s hard to remember peace And so I pray a simple prayer For sweet mercy Mercy

Summertime 02:49
I've been four years old at the end of a gun scared shitless, helpless, hopeless cuz I could not run But I don't care baby I don't mind I'll take a hole in the head over a knife in the back anytime My skin is crawling with memory in the dead of the night my bed feels like a hundred degrees how do you know baby how can you tell now if the lesson you learn just burn you like this heat from hell Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! I need to relax get out of the grind a-go online offline into space and out of time in the belly of a bird or on the wing of the sea just take me out of me into you out of you into me Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! into you out of me into you out of me into you out of me into you out of me

Compromise 07:01
God said man Sink or swim I gave you life You spit on it Sky turned black Black turned red Red turned rain Rain won’t end In the light of compromise In the light of compromise I can see my dreams all disappear Give up your freedom Turn in your faith And watch your dreams all disappear Man said God Let it rain Cuz you gave me life Locked in chains So I won’t swim No I won’t try I’ll stand my ground And watch the water rise I have been blessed beyond my need Still always I have wanted more God, I wanted more God I wanted more God said man You foolish child These golden chains Are of your own design I gave you life Free of will And you chose to make Your world a hell And I am tired Of desire Cuz hungry love can bring you down So give me something To fill me up Hungry love can bring you down Desert night River day Let the water come Wash us away Let the water come We’ll start again

Ash 04:09
Caught in a whisper a glimpse of the truth I wish not to know Together as ever alone I never noticed that holding too tightly I could not breathe Always left wanting by you But the light grows over the ground Leading my feet to turn me around I dream of an empire with buildings of fire and burnings of faith Where love is the music we make But you cannot go there you will not believe without tasting the flame Now black is the ash that remains But the light grows over the ground Leading my feet to turn me around
9.
You may call me a fool For looking like I do Standing here alone While this wild wind blows But I know I know I know I’m alive I know I know I know I’m alive In this twist and tangle of time I spent a lot of years Wondering why Through laughter and tears We try and try and try But I know I know I know I’m alive I know I know I know I’m alive In this twist and tangle of time Life will beat you down With a swift kick into the ground But you got what you need inside yourself And all around you Love surrounds you You just got to feel it inside yourself Can you feel it? Can you feel it? And know and know And know you’re alive And know and know And know you’re alive I know I know I know I’m alive I know I know I know I’m alive In this twist and tangle of time

Forgiveness 03:02
Love only love only love Love only love only love Blind-sided conversation Where your heart beats With angry words But I will hold you With no hesitation So only love can be heard Love only love only love Love only love only love Love only love only love In the face of anger Love only love only love In the face of pain Love only love only love In the face of anger Love only love only love As forgiveness Love only love only love As forgiveness Love only love only love As forgiveness

about

This is an album of demos recorded at my house during 2003-2004. My friend Rob Gal encouraged me to buy a mBox and learn ProTools so I could work on arrangements without the financial constraints of a real studio. I was working odd jobs at the time trying to find my feet again after my band STB had broken up, so I had no money for studio time and the mBox went on a credit card. Working on these songs, from the writing to the experimentation with playing all the instruments to mixing and editing on my own, was a purely creative endeavor. At a time when I felt pretty lost, I gave myself to the music and the music helped me find my way forward. It brought me back in a sense, so I called the collection of demos mouth to mouth.

I recorded the songs as I wrote them, track by track, beginning with an acoustic guitar. I didn't use a click track, the mBox had latency issues and mixing was a back and forth effort between my computer and car speakers trying to hear, but every challenge was just another opportunity to be creative and see what happened. Some of the songs appear later on the first Herman Put Down the Gun CD recorded with a real band in a real studio, but there's a special place in my heart for the original demos and that DIY time of just trying to figure it out.

I recommend listening on headphones:)
